Yoga & Mindful Movement

Noncompetitive movement gives children opportunities to explore body awareness, relaxation, and self-regulation.

Movement without a competition

Yoga enrichment at Journey is led by Miss Jerica, a preschool teacher turned yoga teacher and birth doula who has taught children's yoga since 2012. Her classes focus on noncompetitive movement, body awareness, relaxation, and self-esteem. The emphasis is on exploring, not performing a pose better than someone else.

For young children, an invitation to move can also be an invitation to notice. How does a stretch feel? What happens when we slow down? Children can explore these questions in age-appropriate ways without needing adult-level flexibility, stillness, or a particular result.

Making space to notice and pause

Movement experiences offer another language for learning about feelings and the body. They can sit alongside Journey's connection-centered guidance, giving children opportunities to practice awareness and calming routines. Learning to pause is a developing skill, not something children should be expected to master immediately.

Participation should be understood in the context of each child's comfort and abilities. A child who observes before joining may still be engaged. Ask the school how the specialist adapts activities and supports different needs rather than assuming every child will move in the same way.

Continue gently at home

You do not need special equipment or a demanding routine to be curious about mindful movement together. Ask your child what they enjoyed in class and follow their interest. Keep any home activity comfortable and voluntary, and speak with a qualified professional if you have questions about an injury or health condition.

Yoga enrichment is an educational experience, not medical treatment. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health explains the research, limitations, and safety considerations in much greater depth. Use that guidance to make informed decisions, and bring program-specific questions to Journey.
