A child is a collaborator, not an empty vessel
Reggio Emilia is an educational approach that grew out of a community in northern Italy. It begins with respect for children as people who bring their own questions, experiences, and theories to learning. Rather than treating curiosity as a distraction, adults listen carefully and use it as a starting point for exploration.
At Journey, being Reggio-inspired means inviting children to investigate, make choices, and share their thinking. Teachers guide the experience without supplying every answer. A question about a shadow, a leaf, or a structure can open a conversation that children revisit as their understanding grows.
Many languages, many ways to understand
The "hundred languages" describes the many ways children communicate and make meaning. Drawing, building, movement, music, storytelling, and dramatic play are not simply breaks from learning. They give children different tools to explore an idea, express a feeling, or show something that words alone cannot yet explain.
The environment also matters. Thoughtfully arranged materials and welcoming spaces invite children to notice, experiment, and collaborate. This is what it means to call the environment a "third teacher": the setting helps shape what children can discover, alongside their peers and the adults who support them.
Learning becomes visible
Documentation helps families and teachers see the thinking behind a finished drawing or project. A child's words, observations, and evolving work can reveal how an idea changed over time. The focus is not on producing identical results; it is on understanding each child's process.
Journey brings this learning into conversation through portfolios and Portfolio Nights. Families contribute their knowledge of the child, and teachers share what they notice at school. Reggio-inspired does not mean reproducing the Italian schools exactly. It means thoughtfully bringing these principles into our own community.
